Wake's Cove

departed RYC 1730 arrived Wake's Cove 2130 - Peter, Tanya and Emma onboard

July 1/10

Wake's Cove

Got up a 700 had breakfast and walked to Grand Ma's house.  Upon return got CA trained up on the new Yamaha and then she took Peter out for training too while I geared up for a dive.   All of us went the Breakwater Island (except dogs) for the dive 1.  I experimented with a float and line.  Worked out well but need better deployment method.  Dive Computer went wrong which turned out to be battery replacement required.

Corona will meet us tomorrow near Active Pass tomorrow.

July 2/10

Horton Bay

Left approx 1030 from Wakes', seas were fine but Kona and Tana were stressed.  CA asked that we take a break at Wallace Isld where Peter and I and the dogs just sat ashore.   Then it was decided that we continue to Horton Bay at approx 1630 where we met Corona and Anarobic.   Happy Hour type acitvity and late dinner.

July 3/10

James Bay, Prevost Isld

Departed approx 1000 to Ganges where we visited the Vet for a problem with Kona's eye resulting in no treatment necessary.   After shopping for supplies we continued to James Bay where we indulged in some beach sun tanning on the beach behind the spit.

Active Pass Dive

July 4/10

Monteque Harbour

Took off from James Bay shortly after getting up 930.   Arrived 1000 with Ron and Monique behind us.   Dive 2.  Peter took me diving to Mathew's Point in Active for 1130 dive.   Found the tunnel.   After dive all of us went for a beer picnic on the beach after saying goodbye to Ron and Monica who wanted to make the Dodd Narrows tide.  Had a snooze after picnic (good dive) and then took Peter and Tanya and Emma to the ferry by Catchup since the taxi is not in business anymore.   Saw whales in Active near Ferry terminal.   Approached by Strait Watch in fancy rib.

5-Jul-2010

Thetis Island - Telegraph Harbour

We left Monteque at with plenty of time to spare to meet Running Bear and Rosie at Thetis.   We stopped off at a bay north of tent island for picnic.   We arrive in Telegraph at about 1700.   Anchored amongst moored boats with a short anchor and kellet.   Had dinner on the Corona, walk to the public float and then returned to Sea Foam.

6-Jul-2010

Nanaimo Yacht Club

Left in time to make slack at Dodd Narrows for 1300.  There was 15 - 20 kt winds but just chop before Dodd but after seas built to 4-5 ft past Jack Point.   Tacked into Nanaimo Harbour.   We got the last spot on the recip dock.   I dropped CA off in the rib for shopping and then I did laundry.   $1 per washer(1/2 hr) and dryer 40 min).  $5 for power - good deal.  We wait for the NW to calm for tomorrow.

7-Jul-2010

Anderson Bay, Texada

We departed approx 1100 from NYC.   We were expecting a sea due to the NW's.  Encountered 4 ft seas at the worst splashing the wind screen.   It got better after a hour or two.   Dive 3.  We decided on route to visit Anderson Bay where CA said I could dive again there.  Last year I dove there, there was great vis (maybe 150 ft), this time it was a bit less maybe 100.   Hot and sunny, seas flatten the closer we came to Lasquiti and Texada.  Ater the dive a accidentally dropped my dive computer so I had to dive again to retrieve it.  I marked it with a lead weight and the tow line.

8-Jul-2010

Refuge Cove

Departed 0830 arrived Refuge Cove approx 1530.   Very hot but slight breeze in the pilot house where I am now.   Watch out for tiny reef at head of bay - Good Call from CA.

7/9/2010, July 10 and 11

Shoal Bay

Departed 1315 to catch the tide at Yuculta.  Overcast but started sunny in the morning. Still warm.  Smooth run, perfect timing through the Yuculta's.   We decided to dock at Shoal Bay dock.  We were informed as soon as we arrived that there was a potluck dinner happening so CA after walking Kona ashore prepared a chicken stirfry and salad.    It was a great gathering.   People we met were:

Mark - owner
Mike and Zdenka onaboard the an Nordic Tug "Kissmet"
Guitar player is Kelly and wife Linda stays on the sailboat for the summer

Craig and Annie on the "Mary Kay"

Christina and Nick (english guy leaving for home July 12) are there to help
Roger aboard the "Silent Sam"
"Sailor's Toy"
George and Louise Martin aboard "Surf Scooter"
Dive 4  Dove Hall Point -  Good Dive -  keep near the point.   Ling Cod, only saw one, yellow rock cod, good rock formations for clingers.

12-Jul-2010

Sidney Bay, Loughborough Inlet

Left at 815 but at Loughborough Inlet we encounter sharp 4-5 ft waves (wind against current), so we decided to dock at Sidney Bay where George intended to go.   We radioed them and told him are intentions.  A boat (Sandpiper) already docked broke into our conversation to tell us that there was plenty of dock space.  The dock owner lives across the bay charges $1/ft so now we are paying double to stay and wait.

Sandpiper and Half and Half helped us in.

Dane Campbell, dock owner, lives across bay.

13-Jul-2010

Forward Harbour

We decided to poke are nose out mid afternoon and we were happy to see that the flooding tide had flatten the waves down considerably allowing us to get the Forward Harbour.

14-Jul-2010

Port Neville

Next morning we found the two sailboats that we with us on the dock at Sidney Bay were anchored nearby -  Sanctum and Vera.  We got up at 930.  Dive 5   I managed to get a dive in at Whirlpool rapids where we had previously tried in the past year.  I found a wall which angled outward - large sponges, some ling cod and general life.   grade 7 dive.   Right after the dive we got going and made it as far as Port Neville.  Waves were manageable but we turned in for Kona.

15-Jul-2010

Weddington Bay

Got up and left at 530, made Chatham narrows at near slack, seas were quite tame.  Arrived approx 1200 had lunch and a snooze.  Wind picked up in the afternoon and into the night.

16-Jul-2010

Muirhead Islands

We left at 730 to make Stuart Narrows slack at 1030.  Anchored in Richmond Bay back end.   Good shelter from NW winds.   Had a snooze in the afternoon, when I got up tried 247 one more time and got April who reported that they were anchored in Muirhead Islands.  We decided to relocate there.  We were met by them on the way by Stinger.  We towed Stinger and had a beer together on the bridge of the Sea Foam.  We anchored at a more secluded area near the 247.

17-Jul-2010

Davis Bay

We took the Stinger to the end at Tsibass Lagoon had lunch at the dock near there.   Also stopped off at Creasy Bay to see the old steam ship aground.   Upon arrival back to our anchor spot we decided to relocate to Davis Bay.   Davis Bay tended to be exposed to the NW's but lucky they were not strong.

18-Jul-2010

Turnbull Cove

Dive 6.  Dove Surgeon Islets.  58 pinnacle/reef.  Great dive rated 9, large sea bass in shallows, sea perch (hundreds) deeper, large rocks and very dimensional, many white plumpose.  Relocated next morning to Turnbull and anchored near the avalanche area.   There was about 10 other yachts there.   Next day we went into Nepah Lagoon for a short visit during the slack at Kenneth Passage.   Didn't stay long, boring there, didn't set any prawn traps.   All other trap sets yielded nothing.  CA and I went to the lake for a lunch and a swim.  Upon return we located to Napier Bay.   I met 3 yachts from Burrard Yacht Club tied to the dock.  Neil on a GB.

19-Jul-2010

Napier Bay

Took off early the next morning for Port McNeil. Smooth crossing

July 21-22

Port McNeil

2 nights, stormy but never rained.  Happy hour with Ted and Cheryl from the Bizzare a 47 ft.   Kona checked out, blood panel results due this weekend.

7/23/2010 and 24

Pearse Islands

Cleaned boat while we waited for the tide.  Left at 1330 and arrived at the Pearse Islds at 1530.   We determined that I could still get a dive in judging by the Wenton Pass current tables.

Dive 7 Stephenson Ilets 18 islet - garden dive rated 8, good wall heading EW, usual life lots of plumpose.  247 and Bizzard Ted and Cheryl Turton with us.  Had salmon dinner (caught by Mark early morning) onboard Bizzard.

25-Jul-2010

Dead Point

Dive 8  East tip of 88 isld.  Wall near shore goes down to 80, saw a wolf eel young male, hundreds of sea perch, basket stars grade 9 dive.
Tug underway Blackfish Sound - Polar Storm, 24 beam x 15 draft x 128 length.    We intended to anchor in Native anchorage off Village Isld but 247 didn't like the wind.   We went to Dead Point instead where there was just as much wind.   During anchoring Sea Foam gain to much speed going back of the anchor that it cause the steel clip to bend and snap back and hit me in the knee.   Just a small bruise.   We went to Monk's wall (show Dianne) and then later to Mamaliaculla.   Dock was dilapidated, Stinger aborted, we turned back because of over grown paths.

26-Jul-2010

Goat Isld, Crease Island

No 24/7, anchored in bay behind goat island.   The girls went kayaking,  I tried a prawn trap outside the anchorage, no luck.   We had no luck with ours using cat food.

27-Jul-2010

Alert Bay

Spent the night in Alert Bay.   Did some grocery shopping and found out that there no longer laundry services.   Next morning CA and Dianne went to the museum while I rewired the Catchup, bad connection on bilge pump.

29-Jul-2010

Safety Boat Cove

Dive 8  North point of Stephenson.  White carpet dive, saw 3 ft ling cod with struggling green ling in its mouth.  80 ft vis, lots of rock outcroppings and walls.  No basket stars until very end of island near end of dive.  Rating 8.
We moved off to Double Bay to find MaryMac, no contact on radio, and they were not found to be there.  We decided to move on, too much wave action in the bay, and locate in SBC.

30-Jul-2010

Safety Boat Cove

Dive 9  Off Isld 69 in the Plumpers.  Wall starts at 80 ft and then I was down to 110 ft.  Wall is too deep for the novice.   On top of the walls, with canyons to 160, were hydro coral which I was unable to find attached to small rocks.    Lots of sea perch, basket stars and black bass at the shallows.   Vis 80 ft at least at depth.

Dive 10  Rock in passage in front of SBC.   I was a little late getting in for current.  Garden dive.  Lots of hydro coral.

2-Aug-2010

Port McNeil Anchorage

CA in bed with a fever.  I went for a tour with the Catchup and then returned to go kayaking.  Went for an 1 1/2 hours and upon my return I was greeted by CA in tears.   Her illness had escalated to the point that she wanted to leave immediately for Port McNeil to seek medical attention.   I packed up the kayak and untied we made way to Port McNeil.   During voyage I tried to contact the clinic and hospital but no answer.   Message said to call 911 so I did with CA's confirmation.   An ambulance was waiting when we arrived.   Vital signs taken in ambulance and hospital.   I left CA in the hospital to return to Sea Foam anchored in the P McNeil basin to tend to Kona and stay the night

Bull Harbour

We intend to leave today for Bull Harbour.  Croker Rock dive first since wind has settled overnight so far today.

Upon arrival in Bull Harbour we went to Roller Bay.   It was high tide making it difficult to walk on the rounded rock.   Apparently it is better to go at low tide.

17-Aug-2010

Bell Island Passage
